HON 480: Psychological Impacts of Social Media

After looking over week 8's reading materials and articles, I was in shock. I had always knew social media websites such as Instagram and Twitter were used to gain attention to the user, but I would have never associated it with narcissism and psychopathy. However, after pondering over the articles, it does make a lot of sense. Narcissism is characterized by "extreme self-centernessed and a grandiose view of oneself." Given the very nature of Twitter and Instagram with its functions of liking, retweeting, commenting, etc, it is the perfect tool to feed narcissism. Just like how a lot of people judge your strength by seeing how much you can bench press, how many likes or favorites you can get for a post or a tweet determines how popular you are.    I understand that Presidents and polictians are human and are prone to mistakes just like the rest of us but it is a bit alarming when your president addresses the leader of Australia as a president instead of a prime minster (his proper/actual position) or former White House Press Secretary, Sean Spicer, stating that it was an American vessel instead of a Saudi vessel.    Like I mentioned in one of the comments, one of the things I admire about Trump is his honesty and bluntness but I do believe that when you hold the highest, most important position in our country, there is a level of professionalism you need to maintain. I think when you hold a position in politics, everything you decide to put on social media or say during a press confrence should screened, checked, filtered, and edited beforehand.
