Final Blog

It was pretty easy to integrate Instagram into our presentation since Instagram is a visual social media platform. I can't take any of the credit though because Briana is the one who(one of the members in our group) came up with the idea of taking screenshots of our Powerpoint presentation and uploading them onto Instagram. It was easy to click on links or hashtags since we were already on on the site. The only real problem we encountered was that the text was too small to read even on a projector but this problem was easily resolved by using the zoom in feature on the computer. Because of the visual nature of Instagram, we did not experience a lot of difficulities in using it for our presentation. It essentially worked the same as Powerpoint which is what our presentation was initially on. Overall, I really thought Instagram was the easiest social media platform to incorperate into a presentation. It was fairly easy to use especially with the screenshot option that Mac comp...

Final Comments

Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed the class. The topic itself, "Psychology of Social Media," was what grabbed my attention in the first place. It seemed and was an interesting topic. I loved that your teaching style involved many examples of videos and blogs and wished more professors would implement that into their lectures. A lot of teachers will just lecture on and on and have just words up on their PowerPoint which loses a lot of peoples’ attention. So the videos and examples were a nice way to keep the lecture interesting and refreshing. I also enjoyed that you included a lot of class discussion in your course where you interacted with us, challenged us, and had us interact and discuss with each other as well instead of just lecturing the entire time. This was a nice change of pace and allowed us to hear other peoples’ opinions and perspectives and also let us voice our own opinions. One thing I didn’t enjoy were the books that you selected for us to read. I can honest...

Crowdsourcing

The definition of "crowdsourcing" by Merriam-Webster Dictionary is “the practice of obtaining needed services, ideas, or content by soliciting contributions from a large group of people and especially from the online community rather than from traditional employees or suppliers” It doesn’t necessarily have to be an online community; it can just be a community in general or a large sample of people. The example we saw in class where people had to guess the weight of a cow at a fair was shocking to me and a little hard to believe. The average from the crowd’s guesses turned out to be one number off from the actual weight of the cow. That is astonishing but I think it could have been luck. One thing that I wish they did was replicate this same experiment at different cities or with a different crowd of people and see if the results would be similar.    I do believe that the concept behind crowdsourcing works and is accurate the majority of the time. This is evide...

How should you discipline your children?

I am not expecting to have children anytime soon, but I have thought about how I will discipline my children in the future. Coming from an Asian family, we were always discipline by this "thorn-like, bush" whip and it was very efficient. I, however; also grew up immersed in American culture so I know and have witnessed many of the tactics that American families have used to discipline their children. To be completely honest, I do not believe that there is one fool-proof way to discipline children. Each child is different and will respond differently to each disciplinary tactic or method. I have said this before in my application for medical school, "communication is key. Good communication could be the solution to any problem while bad communication could be the source of all your problems." Communication is an invaluable skill that a physician must utilize in order for their patients to feel comfortable, relaxed, and to get the patients to trust and open up t...

Psychology of Trolling

The whole concept behind trolling is that the users or "trolls" want to get a reaction or response from someone. There are many different kinds of "trolls" so each "troll" wants to get their own specific type of reaction or reponse. Some troll because they want to upset or anger other people. Others do it because they want to produce laughter.  There are six key factors on why there are trolls or why people are more likely to troll on the internet. First is dissociative anonymity which means you are able to hide your real identity online. The second is invisibility because you do not actually see the person you are trolling so it desensitizes your actions. The third is time disconnect or asynchronicity meaning you do not have to respond right away; you can respond on your own time. The other factors involve dehumanizing and disconnecting online actions from reality. What we need to understand is that social media or anything online act only as an am...

Is this Blog Private?

To be completely honest, I could not define privacy in today's society. So I got the general definition from an article,  “broadly speaking, privacy is the right to be let alone, or freedom from interference or intrusion. Information privacy is the right to have some control over how your personal information is collected and used. ”    Personally, I never had an issue with how much privacy we have or have not been given. I don’t mind the FBI or the government looking at my recent search history or the most recent Netflix show I watched (if they even do that) just because I don’t do anything worth paying attention too and I have nothing to hide. Many people argue that their freedom is the most important thing to them but personally, I value security over freedom. If the government is able to monitor and flag certain keywords such as “bomb” or “drugs,” and are able to use this to their advantage to keep our communities a safer place, then I am all for it...

Catfishing: Lying or a Second Chance at a First Impression?

Before this week, I thought the term "catfishing" was a negative concept because at its very core, it was lying. After taking a second look at it and reflecting on all the factors, motives, and intentions that can be correlated to "catfishing," I'm starting to think that maybe the concept isn't as bad as I initially thought.    So what exactly is "catfishing?" "Catfishing" is the phenomenon in whihc people take on different identities on social media and establish relationships with others who are unaware of their real identity. There are many reasons for someone to have a fake profile: they could be trying to trick you into handing over money or other resources, for amusement, or it is their only way for them to express themselves. Many sources have found that most social media profiles reflect who people really are if they weren't too scared of what society's reaction would be.    I have found that "catfishing" is...
